A great choice for your yoga teacher training

Cambodia is the perfect place to immerse yourself in yoga and experience the rhythm of Southeast Asian rural life, with its dazzling rice paddies and swaying sugar palms. The peaceful South Coast is fringed by tropical islands, with just a handful of beach huts in sight. Inland from the coast lie the Cardamom Mountains, a vast protected tropical wilderness that provides a home to elusive wildlife and ecotourism adventures. The mighty Mekong River cuts through the country and is home to some of the region's last remaining freshwater dolphins.

This is an opportunity to experience a masterful delivery of a well balanced yoga teacher training intensive, full of rich meaningful content, combined with an off the beaten track adventure. It will have lasting impact on the way you see and engage the world, as you experience a new culture and gain fresh perspective on life at home. This is ideal for not only an intensive practice of yoga, but also enables the body to detoxify and heal.

Angkor Wat

The traveler's first glimpse of Angkor Wat is simply staggering and is matched by only a few spots on earth such as Machu Picchu or Petra. The temple is the heart and soul of Cambodia. It is the national symbol, the epicentre of Khmer civilization and a source of fierce national pride. Unlike the other Angkor monuments, it was never abandoned to the elements and has been in virtually continuous use since it was built. It is believed to be the world's largest religious building.

Kep Cambodia

Cambodia's coastal regions (Kep, Kampot, Sihanoukville and Koh Kong) have been named amongst the 'Most Beautiful Bays in the World" on the World Bays Website.

Kep province, where the Vine Retreat is located, is in the southeastern most corner of Cambodia, on the border with Vietnam to the west. Kep province is a popular tourist destination for those seeking rest and relaxation in nature. The area is ideal for a yoga certification course, lush green landscapes and only the sound of birdsong punctuating the silence. Many come to escape the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh or rest up after visiting the Angkor Wat temples in Siem Reap or the seashore of Sihanoukville. Kep offers visitors a glimpse of rural Cambodia with its green rice paddies, the forested hills and the expansive views of Kep Bay.

The coolness of the morning and evening air is excellent for a healthy and productive pranayama / meditation practice. Many authorities on the subject would say that these practices can in fact be unhealthy if pursued in areas of pollution and hot/cold extreme temperatures.

The Vine Retreat

Located in Kep Cambodia, The Vine Retreat, is an eco-friendly and socially responsible retreat guest house. The center is nestled in the foothills of Phnom Voar mountain, just 5km from the southern coast of Cambodia. It offers the tranquility of a rural setting, lush green countryside views, and a warm farmhouse style atmosphere. Cool off with a dip in the naturally filtered saltwater swimming pool. Relax with an aromatherapy massage. Take a stroll under swaying palm trees. A perfect, serene setting for your yoga training.

The center nourishes its own vibrant organic gardens, which provide us with daily fresh organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices for our delicious vegetarian meals. Most food is made in-house, including fresh bread, yogurt, teas, preserves, cakes and dressings. This is a wonderful opportunity to detox and enjoy clean eating during your intensive yoga training. We will serve fresh, sustainably produced farm to table organic food, while supporting the farming community. During the day we have a selection of salads, sandwiches and traditional Cambodian dishes as well as fresh smoothies, juices and teas. In the evening, we sample seasonal menus.

On days off, we offer excursions to the hauntingly beautiful Bokor National Park, where on a clear day, there are stunning views down into the valley, Kampot town scenery, and the coastline of Kampot and Sihanoukville; and to Rabbit Island, with what are considered the finest beaches in the region.

Travel Insurance

You are strongly encouraged to purchase your own travel insurance. We can't emphasize this enough. Stuff happens. This will cover you for any medical care you need, loss/damage of any goods, and any disruption or cancellation of your travel. Choose the "cancel for any reason" option for the most coverage. We have had good experience with Allianz. Brokers such as www.insuremytrip.com provide ratings and quotes for a number of different insurance agencies. Choose the "cancel for any reason" option for the most coverage.

Visas

To apply for a visa on arrival, you will need two passport-size photos, a passport which is valid for at least 6 months and has at least one completely blank visa page remaining, and clean US$ notes with which to pay the fee.

Tourist visas: All visitors, except citizens of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam need a visa to enter Cambodia. Visas are available on arrival at both international airports, all six international border crossings with Thailand, some international border crossings with Vietnam, and at the main border crossing with Laos. The official price for a tourist visa is USD20. It is valid for one stay of up to 30 days. Those issued in advance expire 90 days after issue. In Phnom Penh (or elsewhere via agencies), tourist visas can be extended only once, allowing an additional 30 days at a cost of around USD30. Our retreat center will offer visa extensions to anyone staying for the Zero to 500 hour program.

At Phnom Penh airport, head to the Visa on Arrival desk, join the queue to the left, where your application form is reviewed (you should have been given the form on the plane). Then move to the right and wait for your name to be called. You then pay and receive your passport with the visa. Once reunited with your passport, join the Immigration queue.

E-visa

Citizens of most nations can apply for an e-Visa on-line on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation website, through a service provided by a private Cambodian company. This is a normal Tourist Visa but costs USD25 instead of the normal USD20. The visa arrives as a PDF file by e-mail within 3 business days. The application requires a digital photograph of yourself (in .jpg or .png format). You can scan your passport photo or have a passport sized photograph taken with a digital camera. There are other websites pretending to make a Cambodian e-visa - at best, these are just on-line travel agencies which will charge you more (USD30-45) and get the same USD25 visa for you; at worst, you may end up with a fake e-visa. You need to print two copies (one for entry and one for exit) of the PDF visa, cut out the visa parts and keep them with your passport.

Visas in advance (either on-line or from an embassy/consulate) save time at the border but are more expensive. However, you do get to skip the queues of people applying for the visas arrival, although sometimes you may simply spend the saved time waiting at the airport luggage belt for your suitcase.

Note: This visa information is provided as a guide only. Please check with the Cambodian Consulate in your home country for the most accurate and up-to-date Cambodian visa information.

Arrival by air

Book your flight to Phnom Penh

On arrival in Cambodia

Upon arrival at Phnom Penh airport, we have arranged airport pickup for our Cambodia yoga teacher training guests. Look for the driver holding a sign either with your name and/or The Vine Retreat). The Vine is located 4km off Highway 33 the main road running between Phnom Penh and Kep. It is about a 2.5 hours drive from Phnom Penh airport.

Transport in Kep / getting around

The closest major town, Kep, is about a 20 minute drive away. Locally, you can get around via tuk-tuk, taxi or bicycle. Staff at the retreat center can help procure any supplies you might need during your stay.

Health & Safety

As for all destinations, you should check your government's travel advisories before you depart, follow your own wisdom, and listen to local advice when you arrive. Cambodia, one of the world's poorest countries, lacks reliable medical facilities, doctors, clinics, hospitals and medication, especially in rural areas. Any serious problem will be dealt with in Bangkok or Singapore, which offer first rate medical services. Repatriation is also more easily arranged from either of those cities. Make sure your insurance covers medical evacuation.

Vaccinations - check what vaccinations you need to travel to Cambodia and ensure you have the required vaccinations well before departure date. Some vaccinations, such as Hepatitis A and B, must be administered at 0, 1 and 6 month intervals prior to travel for optimal protection.

Hygiene and food/water - there are some risks of traveler's diarrhea, by far the most common problem affecting travelers. It is important to drink only bottled/boiled water, choose food carefully and wash your hands regularly. Please do not drink the tap water, it is unsuitable for consumption. Our retreat center provides unlimited drinking water for our group.

Mosquito-borne diseases - Phnom Penh is malaria free, and most major tourist attractions (including Siem Riep) are virtually malaria free. The biggest disease worry is mosquito-borne dengue fever which, although quite unpleasant (it's called "break-bone fever" because of how it feels) generally isn't life-threatening for first-time victims. It is recommended you bring repellent and long clothing to cover your skin at dawn/dusk.

What to bring to your Cambodia Yoga Teacher Training

- Several changes of your favorite lightweight yoga clothes. Our practice space is open-air, and it gets warm! Laundry service is included at the resort, so no need to over pack.
- A sarong - a wonderful multipurpose item that keeps bugs away during savasana, covers your legs to visit temples, and will ward off any evening chill.
- Comfortable sandals or flip-flops are a must, and should be easy removed as most people here do not wear shoes indoors.
- Sneakers for Bokor trek
- Swim wear and a beach towel
- Hat
- Sunscreen
- Toiletries
- First aid kit (antibiotics, hydro-cortisone, aspirin, antibiotic cream, band-aids)
- Mosquito repellent
- Personal medication
- Sanitary products
- Adapter for electronics
- Flashlight
- Refillable water bottle
- Notebook & pen
- Required reading as book or ebook
- Yoga mat (you can also purchase in Ubud. As a lightweight travel mat, we like Jade Travel Mat)
- Mat cleaner (we like Herban Essentials' yoga wipes)

Yoga Props

Our venue will be supplying yoga mats, belts, blankets, blocks and meditation cushions. However we strongly recommend bringing your own yoga mat for optimal hygiene and comfort.
Weather
The ideal months to visit Cambodia are December and January, when humidity levels are relatively low, there is little rainfall, and a cooling breeze whips across the land. This is peak season for Cambodia, and the perfect time for our yoga teacher training.

Money

The Cambodian riel and US dollar are both official currencies, with riel only used for small transactions (i.e. below $5). US coins are not used in Cambodia. ATMs will generally only dispense US dollars though some are loaded with both currencies. ATMs are common throughout the country with a surprising penetration even into backwater towns, though if in doubt stock up before a trip into remote areas.

You will not need much cash during this course, as it is all-inclusive. Bring extra for souvenirs and massages. You can exchange foreign cash at banks and local exchange offices. Don't forget to tell your bank and credit card companies the dates that you will be traveling, or they might cut off your funds for fraud protection. Asia prefers Visa / MasterCard.

Internet & SIM Cards

WiFi is free at the yoga retreat center. Its speed is more suited to email checks and status updates than for video streaming. Sim cards are easily available and cheap in Cambodia if you wish to make local phone calls on your global ready phone. Cambodia uses the GSM mobile system. Mobitel is the largest operator. Prepaid SIM cards are widely available (USD1 and up).
Tourists can add 3G/4G mobile Internet to their SIM for as little as $3/month (0.8GB max, LT3 package)(Onetime) or 1c/MB with Qbmore or unlimited data package for $25/month (Metfone).

Course packages and Pricing

Packages include accommodation as well as daily breakfast, lunch and dinner. Water and tea are available all day, and an afternoon fruit snack will be served. Natural, vegetarian and raw local foods are emphasized. Please let us know any dietary restrictions (vegan, allergies) on your application. A special group celebration dinner on the first and and last evening is also included. All beds are equipped with mosquito nets.
