Zuna Tribe Reunion
Sabine - Italy
May 11 - May 18 2019
Next stop: Italy! We’re so excited to be leading this 6 day / 7 night retreat in the Sabine Hills of Italy, near Rome and Umbria. Join your fellow Zuna Yogis for a week of deep practice, old country rustic comfort, and good times, led by Zuna Yoga founders Everett and Katherine. Enjoy sun-soaked days, surrounded by endless views of rolling green hills and olive groves. Make time for dreaming and philosophizing, for new inspiration and fresh collaborations. Reunite with yogis from your own training, and meet new like-minded yogi friends from around the globe. Drink a tall cool glass of smarana: self remembrance. It's the foundation of Zuna Yoga practice and tradition.
This retreat will follow a less rigid format than you've experienced at your yoga teacher training. It will be laid back and fun, with plenty of free time to balance out our juicy practices. All yoga, meditation and yoga nidra sessions are optional. This event is being offered for Zuna Yoga teacher training graduates only. Want to bring a Zunafied friend or partner? Please send us an email to discuss details.
In Sabina, an elegant and breathtaking retreat centre in the heart of the Sabine Hills, offers spectacular views and a magical setting. Less than an hour north of Rome near Umbria, it lies in the midst of the untouched Italian country side.
The area is rich in sites of historic and natural beauty. We can organize walks and excursions to hot sulfur springs, medieval sites, local festivals in surrounding villages and trips to Rome and Umbria. Cities and towns within easy reach of In Sabina include Rome (45 minutes), Spoleto and Orvieto (1 hour), Siena and Assisi (2 hours).
The best months for traveling in much of Italy are from April to June: Temperatures are usually comfortable, rural colors are rich, and the crowds aren't too intense. The night temperature is around 12-14℃, while it gets 20-24℃ during the day. There is usually not much rain in May, with plenty of glorious sunny but not too hot days.
The property is peaceful and rustic, offering a haven for spiritual practice, relaxation and rejuvenation. The retreat centre’s grounds are lush and abundant with lovely gardens, a pond, a natural spring and swimming pool. It’s the perfect location for stunning sunsets and nature walks.
The yoga practice will be held outdoors on the magnificent wooden yoga platform overlooking the lush valley or in the serene and tranquil indoor yoga space with views over the hills and vales.
Three delicious Italian/vegetarian meals will be served daily, prepared by a private chef with the freshest ingredients available. Before the morning yoga practice teas, fruit and juices will be available. We can accommodate your special dietary requests such as allergies, vegan or gluten free. There is an area near the pool to make tea or coffee at any time of day or night. Breakfast, lunch & dinner will be served alfresco, weather permitting. On one evening, there will be dinner out at a local restaurant.*Note: this excludes lunch while on an excursion or on our last evening when we go to the local town.
You can easily sink into a week of deep rest and rejuvenation here, without the need for a lot of planned activity. Relax by the swimming pool, luxuriate in a massage or treatment with an excellent therapist, find a quiet secluded spot with a good book, or take a walk in the stunning natural surroundings. There are nice walks from the house and even better ones just a short drive away. It’s a scenic 30 minute walk to the local village to explore the authentic cafes, get a taste of Italian country living, and enjoy the incredible views.
For those who’d like to explore the area, it is rich in sites of historic and natural beauty. Only 10 minutes away, the charming medieval hilltop village of Casperia is a favorite haunt for In Sabina groups for dinner out on a Friday evening. It’s possible to walk to the villages of Casperia and Rocchette, either one way (getting a minibus for the return trip) or round trip for a nice day’s hike. For those who wish to spend time in the area before or after the retreat, the beautiful La Torretta in the historic center is a wonderful family run B&B. An optional day trip to the culturally rich hill town of Orvieto, just an hour away, is also offered during the week. Other nearby activities and day trips include:
Each morning will begin with the juicy Zuna Yoga practice you know and love. This is an intense 2 hr 45 min hatha vinyasa session, with a long savasana followed by pranayama, meditation, mantra or yoga nidra. Following our practice, we will have a sumptuous breakfast on the terrace. Silence is optional at breakfast.
The afternoon is free for you to take a walk in the green countryside, read a book, nap, indulge in a massage or schedule a private session with Everett. **Activities may incur additional charges.**
At 5:30pm the group will reconvene for our evening yoga practice, which will be either a slow flow, restorative, or an educational asana workshop. The evening yoga schedule will be determined shortly prior to the retreat start date. Evening yoga classes will be held on the outdoor yoga platform or in the indoor yoga studio.
Dinner will be served al fresco in the late evening. Followed by time to unwind, swap stories, play some games or read a good book.
Lights out is encouraged by 10:00pm.
The exquisitely restored 17th century stone buildings have been converted into accommodation and overlook a panorama of olive groves and fruit trees. The rooms are designed in a simple, natural style, with a combination of new and antique furnishings. Four of the bedrooms are en-suite, the other rooms share a bathroom between two rooms. The property sleeps 21 in total, with several different options & price points. All accommodation is shared between two or three people, with limited availability for single occupancy.
• Double or triple room, ensuite bathroom: USD$1500
• Double room, shared bathroom: USD$1300
• Single supplement for one of the above rooms: $400, very limited availability
• Yurt, single, outdoor bathroom and shower USD$1300
There are three single occupancy yurts (circular canvas tents) close to the pool area with two warm outdoor showers and a shared indoor bathroom facility, 60 m away. The yurts can be warm in the day but sometimes cold at night. There is no electricity inside - just simple solar lighting. They do not suit everyone - only those who like ‘comfortable camping’. We recommend that the yurts be for single use only as they are small - or only for people who know each other very well. A double bed inside is possible for couples.
The retreat center does not offer WiFi. Please purchase a local SIM card for your unlocked phone at the airport if you need to be online. Mobile service is fast and inexpensive in Italy.
The yoga retreat is within easy access of Rome and its airports. There are a huge range of flight options to choose from, just take a look on Skyscanner.
We recommend reviewing all the update to date and super useful information about our arrival city on Wikitravel.
Why not arrive a couple days early and explore the magnificent city of Rome? Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With wonderful palaces, a thousand year old churches, grand romantic ruins, opulent monuments, ornate statues and graceful fountains, Rome has an immensely rich historical heritage and cosmopolitan atmosphere, making it one of Europe's and the world's most visited, influential and beautiful capitals. Rome has a vibrant culinary and nightlife scene and is also seen as a shopping heaven, being regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world. With so many sights and things to do, Rome can truly be classified a "global city".
Rome has two airports: Leonardo da Vinci (Fumicino, FCO) and Ciampino (CIA). It is best to book a flight arriving between 10am and 2pm to join the group transfer that will depart from both airports at 3:30pm.
Please note that the earliest arrival time at In Sabina on May 11th is 4.30pm. In Sabina cannot receive guests before then. The latest departure time on May 18th is 10am. Those arriving after 3:30pm on May 11th and departing before 10am on May 18th will be responsible for their own transportation to/from In Sabina.
For those who wish to be independent or to explore the area you could choose to hire a car at the airport. You can also coordinate in advance with your fellow yogis and share a car hire.
We recommend that you join the minibus transfers from the airports, which will be arranged to bring you directly to In Sabina. The earliest time a minibus can leave the airport is 3.30pm and we suggest that if you are on an earlier flight that you wait there. You will be advised of the exact meeting point nearer the time. If there is a group arriving at Ciampino airport then a transfer from there can also be arranged for the same price.
If you prefer to take a train the closest station to In Sabina is Stimigliano. From Fumicino (Leonardo da Vinci Airport) the train costs €11 one way and takes 1 hour and 50 minutes. A taxi from Stimigliano station costs €25 (for up to 3 people with little luggage). To check train times, see www.ferroviedellostato.it There is no direct train from Ciampino Airport to Stimigliano Station.
Pick up from Stimigliano train station – by car or minibus (20 minutes). If you are coming by train you must call or text us, on the day, when you know which train you will be on.
Departure / Return
On your day of departure the latest train you can take from Stimigliano is at 8.58. For those with cars (or those leaving by minibus) the departure time is 10.0am.
If you have an early flight, trains run from 4.42am (arrive at the airport 6.33) onwards.
